Christine本是劇團一個默默無聞的小演員，在一個偶然的機會中，她頂替劇團的首席女演員上台演唱，那天使般的美妙歌聲立刻受到了觀眾的熱烈歡迎，也引起了她小時候的玩伴、英俊富有的子爵Raoul的注意。
原來，有位神秘的老師暗中教導著Christine。這位被Christine稱作「音樂天使」的老師其實就是巴黎歌劇院人人談之色變的「劇院幽靈」（the Phantom）。Phantom的真名叫Erik，是個集音樂家、建築師、魔術師……於一身的奇才。然而不幸的是，他天生一張畸形醜陋的面孔，被人們所恐懼和厭惡，不得不戴上面具，棲身於巴黎歌劇院迷宮般的地下室中。
